The Vocabula Review

Many congratulations on the 100th issue. You are, and it is, a delight, a source of comfort and inspiration, an island in the dreadful sea of dumbing down. Thank goodness for you. (And I'm exceptionally proud to be a part of Vocabula.) — Carey Harrison

I find that I miss Vocabula. I am a lapsed subscriber who would like to re-subscribe. How much will I have to pay and how do I go about re-subscribing? — Barbara Paul-Emile, Ph.D.

I am renewing my subscription. Just to let you know that I'm really enjoying Vocabula. — May Chokshi

You are doing so much for so many writers. I only hope that some day you get the reward you deserve. Well, I guess I mean the cash — you already have the esteem of legions of largely impoverished cognoscenti. — John Kilgore

I subscribed to your website less than a month ago with hopes of improving my writing. And, within a month, I have improved a lot; I especially enjoy your emphasis on concision, which — as a lover of aphorisms — is always my demand as a reader. I should tell you, too, that the essays published in Vocabula display a charm and polish that I have not encountered elsewhere; they are always learned, but never academic. Your website is truly, Mr. Fiske, a beautiful gift for lovers of the English language. — Brandon V. Abdullah

So glad to have rediscovered Vocabula! Years ago I was head of corporate communications for a dot.com, and the unrelenting geek-speak was rubbing off on my staff. I read about The Dimwit's Dictionary and purchased a copy for each staff member. Aside from the title, which took some explaining, the book made a noticeable difference in the quality of our writing. Today, I am hosting a holiday lunch for the public relations staff of Corinthian Colleges, and they will receive access to Vocabula as a gift, along with a copy of the recent WSJ article. What could be a better gift for a group of professional communicators? Thanks for fighting, as you so aptly put it, against the "devolution of language". It matters. — Anna Marie Dunlap

I will be retiring next month to my country of origin (in Europe). This is the only reason for my not renewing my Vocabula subscription. For the last few years, I thoroughly enjoyed every issue. — Emile Gergin

The Vocabula Review is one of those reads I like to savor, saving an article for each night, but invariably, once I've read one article, I forget my intention and whiz right on to the next piece, finishing them all before I notice what's happening, and then feeling somewhat guilty afterward (sort of like sneaking decadent candy meant for the guests). Has the English language been corrupted beyond repair? Or, is it growing more flexible and descriptive every day? No matter where you stand on the state of our language, you'll find pithy and contemplative essays supporting and challenging your viewpoint in this monthly newsletter. A companion to the Vocabula Review Web site, the newsletter features the first paragraphs of new articles posted on the site. "First paragraphs" is a rather wan description for some; "opening salvos" might be more accurate. Some writers despair at what passes for proper spelling and grammar these days, while others argue for a more inclusive view of communication. I have just discovered your site. What a relief. I have spent nearly all my life trying to teach people to write clear, well-formed sentences in a country where there is little acknowledgement of the need for such things. In the past, under apartheid, there was every reason to use language to distort and confuse reality. Now there is a rejection of standards in the name of democracy and freedom. "A society is generally as lax as its language" strikes a real chord. If you have read our president's explanation for the spread of HIV/AIDS you will understand what I mean. The barbarians are camped beneath the city walls. If you have a mailing list please put me on it. Otherwise, a carrier pigeon or smoke signals will do. — Michael Rice
