A Poem Lucy Blodget Neill
Web version

What I Need Now

What I need now is to bite into birch bark and find it sweet;
To drown in a black opal,
To braid a cantering horse's tail,
To rip a sheet of silver in half and see its edges drip like caramel.

What I need now is the fast-forward button to the whole world —
I won't use it, I'll be busy
Impaling my eyes on the spikes of light
From a prism in sun.
The agony of emerald!
The enormity of red!
How can blue hurt so much?
Oh, amethyst, color of God, my vision staggering out of your band
Sees a whole purple universe. My mind
Needs to know right now,
Is Truth still itself without sharp instruments?

Truth comes out in her flat shoes and apron.
"I'm always here," she says.

If you enjoyed this poem,
let your friends read it, too
